Why Original Art Matters in Interior Design | How to Create a Luxury Home with Personality

There’s a reason the homes that stop you in your tracks never feel like a showroom. They feel layered, personal, a little unexpected… and almost always, they include original art.

I honestly think original artwork is what gives a home its heartbeat. You can have the perfect sofa, beautiful lighting and expensive finishes, but without art? It can still feel a bit flat. Original pieces bring warmth, personality and that collected-over-time feeling that makes a space feel lived in rather than styled for a catalogue.
One of my favourite things when designing a space is seeing how contemporary artwork completely changes the energy of a room. A large abstract painting can soften a modern interior, while textured coastal artwork adds depth and calm without needing to scream for attention. Good art doesn’t just “match the cushions” — it creates a feeling.
If you’re investing in your home, investing in original art is one of the most worthwhile things you can do. Unlike mass-produced prints, original paintings have presence. They become conversation starters, heirloom pieces, and often the thing guests remember most about your home. There’s something special about owning a piece nobody else has.
I always encourage clients to buy artwork that gives them a reaction, not just something that fills a blank wall. If you keep coming back to a piece, there’s probably a reason. Trust that instinct.
Whether you’re styling a luxury coastal home, renovating a modern city apartment, or simply wanting your home to feel more elevated and personal, original art is what pulls everything together. It’s the difference between a nice room… and a space with soul.
